Tour itinerary
Day 1 — Journey to the Yarapa River and First Rainforest Exploration
We’ll begin our Amazon rainforest tour from Iquitos at 8:00 AM, with pickup from your hotel or the airport. From there, we’ll travel approximately 1.5 hours by road to Nauta, where we’ll board a traditional riverboat and head toward the Yarapa River, in the buffer zone of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Our ecolodge is located deep in the Peruvian Amazon, surrounded by rainforest and waterways.
The boat journey takes approximately 2.5 hours, depending on the season and weather conditions. Along the way, we may spot Amazonian birds, river dolphins, and, if we’re lucky, sloths resting in the trees along the riverbanks. We expect to arrive at the ecolodge around 1:00 PM, just in time for lunch and a short rest.
In the afternoon, we’ll set out on a guided rainforest walk through primary forest. Our local guide will introduce us to towering trees, different species of palms, medicinal plants, and seeds used in traditional local crafts. We’ll also look for tracks and other signs of mammals that inhabit the Peruvian Amazon.
We’ll return to the ecolodge before nightfall to enjoy dinner.
After dinner, we’ll head out on a nighttime caiman-spotting excursion around nearby lakes and waterways. Accompanied by our guide, we’ll explore the caimans’ natural habitat and learn more about these fascinating reptiles while observing them responsibly and respecting the surrounding wildlife.
Activities: Transfer from Iquitos to Nauta, Amazon River boat journey, wildlife watching, guided rainforest walk, and nighttime caiman spotting.
Accommodation: Ecolodge in the buffer zone of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
Day 2 — Birdwatching, Amazonian Communities, and Wildlife on the Yarapa River
We’ll start the day early with a birdwatching excursion in the Peruvian Amazon. This area is home to an incredible variety of bird species, including herons, macaws, toucans, kingfishers, hummingbirds, and trogons. Along the riverbanks, we’ll also keep an eye out for sloths and green iguanas resting in the trees.
Afterward, we’ll return to the ecolodge for breakfast. Later in the morning, we’ll visit Puerto Miguel, a welcoming riverside community of the Indigenous Cocama people. Accompanied by our guide, we’ll learn about their history, traditions, and everyday life along the river.
After lunch at the lodge, we’ll set off at around 3:00 PM to explore the Yarapa River by boat, continuing to its confluence with the mighty Amazon River. Along the way, we’ll look for pink river dolphins and learn about their behavior, their role in the Amazon ecosystem, and the threats they face in the wild.
We’ll return to the ecolodge around dusk for dinner. Afterward, we’ll head out on a guided night walk through the rainforest, looking for frogs, tarantulas, snakes, scorpions, and other nocturnal wildlife. With our guide’s help, we’ll discover the fascinating creatures that come to life after sunset.
Activities: Birdwatching, visit to a Cocama community, boat excursion along the Yarapa and Amazon rivers, pink river dolphin watching, and a guided nighttime rainforest walk.
Accommodation: Ecolodge in the buffer zone of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
Day 3 — Piranha Fishing and Return to Iquitos
After breakfast at our ecolodge, we’ll enjoy an exciting piranha fishing experience in the Peruvian Amazon. Accompanied by our local guide, we’ll travel by boat to a suitable fishing spot, where we’ll try to catch piranhas and other fish species found in Amazonian rivers.
Once the activity is over, we’ll return to the lodge, where our cook will prepare some of the fish we’ve caught to accompany our lunch. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy an authentic Amazonian culinary experience surrounded by the rainforest.
After lunch, we’ll say goodbye to the jungle and begin our boat journey back to Nauta. From there, we’ll continue by road to Iquitos.
