5-Day / 4-Night Amazon Rainforest Tour Itinerary

Day 1 — Yarapa River, Local Community Visit, and River Dolphins

Our adventure begins at 8:00 AM with pickup from your hotel or the airport in Iquitos. We’ll travel approximately 1.5 hours by road to Nauta, where we’ll board a traditional boat and navigate toward the Yarapa River area, in the buffer zone of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Our ecolodge is located deep in the Peruvian Amazon, surrounded by lush rainforest and winding waterways.

The boat journey takes approximately 2.5 hours, depending on the season and weather conditions. Along the way, we may spot Amazonian birds, river dolphins, and, if we’re lucky, sloths resting in the trees along the riverbanks. We expect to arrive at the ecolodge around 1:00 PM, just in time for lunch and a short rest.

In the afternoon, we’ll take a guided rainforest walk through primary forest. Along the way, we’ll discover towering trees, different species of palms, medicinal plants, and seeds used in traditional local crafts. We’ll also look for tracks and other signs of mammals that inhabit the Peruvian Amazon.

Before nightfall, we’ll return to the ecolodge for dinner.

After dinner, we’ll set out on a guided nighttime excursion to look for caimans in nearby lakes and waterways. Our guide will help us explore their natural habitat and learn about these fascinating reptiles while respecting the surrounding wildlife.

Day 2 — Exploring the Heart of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

After breakfast, we’ll prepare our camping gear and travel by boat to Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, one of the most important protected natural areas in the Peruvian Amazon. After approximately one hour on the Amazon River, we’ll reach the reserve’s control and monitoring station, where we’ll present our entry permits and receive a brief introduction to the reserve from a park ranger.

We’ll then continue to Poza Cocha, a beautiful Amazonian lake where we’ll set up camp. Our local guide will prepare lunch over an open fire, surrounded by the rainforest.

After lunch and a short rest, we’ll take a boat excursion around the lake in search of river otters and other Amazonian wildlife.

At sunset, we’ll enjoy the beautiful Amazonian scenery from the boat as the sun sets over the waterways and surrounding rainforest.

After breakfast, we’ll pack our camping gear and travel deeper into the rainforest toward Cocha Cushuri. During the boat excursion, we may spot squirrel monkeys, green iguanas, and other wildlife native to the Peruvian Amazon.

Upon arrival, we’ll set up camp and prepare lunch surrounded by nature.

In the afternoon, our local guide will take us to areas where we may be able to observe capybaras and giant river otters in their natural habitat. Wildlife sightings depend on environmental conditions and the animals’ natural behavior.

We’ll arrive at Cocha Cumaceba, a natural setting ideal for piranha fishing and wildlife watching. After setting up camp, we’ll enjoy an exciting Amazon fishing experience, with the chance to catch different fish species. If conditions allow, some of our catch will be prepared for lunch.
