DAY ONE:
Journey into Pacaya Samiria
After breakfast, one of our vehicles and a certified guide will pick you up from your hotel in Iquitos. We’ll begin a scenic 1.5-hour drive to the port town of Nauta, the gateway to the Pacaya Samiria Reserve.
In Nauta, we board a comfortable speedboat for a 5-hour journey along the majestic Marañón River. As we navigate deeper into the Amazon, you’ll witness a changing landscape teeming with lush vegetation and rich biodiversity.
Midway through our journey, we’ll stop at the First Control Station in the Samiria River Basin. Here, we’ll present our permits and register our entry into this Protected Natural Area. Our guide, along with a local park ranger, will explain the ecological significance of the reserve and introduce the key species that inhabit it.
Continuing upriver, we reach the remote community of San Martín de Tipishca, home to the Cocama Cocamilla people. This welcoming village will be our base camp for the days ahead. Estimated arrival: 2:00 p.m.
Upon arrival, we’ll settle into a local family home for an authentic Amazonian homestay. Take a moment to rest as your hosts prepare a delicious homemade lunch using regional ingredients.
In the afternoon, we’ll explore the community on foot. Visit family farms, discover ancestral traditions, and learn how this community lives in harmony with nature—preserving both culture and biodiversity.
Later, we head by boat to a nearby Amazonian creek, where we may spot grey and pink river dolphins in their natural habitat. You’ll also have a chance to swim nearby and observe a rich variety of tropical birds.
We’ll wrap up the day by watching a stunning sunset over the beautiful lake, a magical moment surrounded by the sounds of the jungle.
Return to the community for a homemade dinner with your hosts.
Afterward, enjoy a peaceful rest and recharge for the adventures that await on day two.
DAY TWO:
🐊 Amazon Expedition: Into the Heart of Pacaya Samiria
After breakfast, we’ll pack up our camping equipment and head out by boat toward the heart of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, one of the Amazon’s most biodiverse regions.
By late morning, we’ll reach a pristine lagoon surrounded by river dolphins and a variety of bird species. We'll select a suitable area to set up camp and prepare a fresh lunch over an open fire.
In the afternoon, we’ll head out on a piranha fishing expedition, with the possibility of catching other native species as well. Our catch will be cooked Amazon-style and served for dinner.
As night falls, we’ll take a boat excursion along the lagoon's edge to search for caimans in their natural environment. With safety as our priority, we’ll attempt to gently capture a few for observation and unforgettable photo opportunities, then return to camp.
DAY THREE:
🌳 Amazon Adventure: Wildlife, Jungle Trails & Traditional Fishing
We’ll wake to the calls of tropical birds, the perfect opportunity to go early-morning birdwatching. With some luck, we may also spot the majestic paiche, the Amazon’s iconic giant fish.
After a traditional breakfast, we’ll navigate a narrow jungle river en route to our second campsite. Along the way, we’ll look for monkeys, exotic birds, and—if conditions are right—giant river otters.
Upon arrival, we’ll set up our tents while our cook prepares lunch. You’ll have time to rest, surrounded by the peaceful energy of the rainforest.
In the afternoon, we’ll explore nearby jungle trails, searching for tracks left by jaguars, tapirs, and other large mammals. Though sightings are rare, your guide will help interpret the signs of these elusive species.
After dinner, we’ll take a night walk along the riverbank to try traditional arrow fishing, used for generations by Amazonian communities. This area has also been known for rare sightings of anacondas and electric eels, making it an exciting and immersive experience.
DAY FOUR:
🌿 Jungle Hike, Ranger Station & Nocturnal Wildlife
After breakfast, we’ll dismantle our camp and begin a 1.5-hour guided hike through the Amazon rainforest, making our way to the banks of the Samiria River.
At the river, a boat will be waiting to take us to Monitoring Post No. 03. Upon arrival, we’ll enjoy lunch by the riverside, surrounded by the raw beauty of the reserve.
After registering at the post, we’ll evaluate—with our guide and the park rangers—the possibility of spending the night at the station. This unique opportunity allows us to interact with the conservation team, learn about their daily responsibilities, and participate in real fieldwork that protects this vital ecosystem.
In the evening, we’ll head out by boat to explore a nearby lagoon, on the lookout for iconic nocturnal species such as vipers, anacondas, owls, and other creatures that awaken after dark.
DAY FIVE:
🌫️ Daybreak Wildlife, River Journey & Night Jungle Hike
At dawn, we’ll return to the mysterious morning lagoon, hoping to spot the paiche in its natural habitat. As the mist lifts, flocks of birds gathering above the water will create an unforgettable and dreamlike landscape.
After breakfast, we’ll continue our expedition by boat, navigating for several hours through the dark, mirror-like waters of the Samiria River on our way to Monitoring Post No. 04.
During this stretch of the journey, we’ll keep an eye out for river turtles, caimans, iguanas, and—if we're lucky—capybaras peeking out from fallen logs and riverside brush.
At night, we’ll take a guided walk through the untouched forest of Pacaya Samiria, where the silence is absolute and the chances of spotting wildlife increase dramatically due to the region’s rich biodiversity.
DAY SIX:
🚤 Return to San Martín de Tipishca & Final Night in the Amazon
After breakfast, we’ll begin our journey back to the community of San Martín de Tipishca. This full-day navigation takes us once again through a kaleidoscope of Amazonian landscapes, offering more chances to spot wildlife along the ever-changing waterways.
DAY SEVEN:
🌺 Final Day in the Community: Ancestral Wisdom & Cultural Exchange
On our final morning in the community, we’ll take part in a special cultural experience. We’ll meet the local shaman, who will share myths and legends from the jungle, along with insights into traditional Amazonian medicine and the important role the shaman plays in community life.
After a traditional lunch, we’ll enjoy a brief rest in preparation for an afternoon of cultural connection and celebration.
DAY EIGHT:
Return Journey to Iquitos: Farewell to Pacaya Samiria
Depending on available transportation, we will depart from the community of San Martín de Tipishca as early as 4:00 a.m., or slightly later. The river journey to Nauta will take between 4 to 8 hours, depending on river conditions and the type of boat used.
Upon arrival in Nauta, our private vehicle will be waiting to take us back to the city of Iquitos. This marks the end of an unforgettable expedition through the heart of the Amazon rainforest.
NOTE: Arrival in the city will be at approximately 6:30 p.m. All our programs are flexible, and activities may change depending on weather conditions. We’re ready for an unforgettable adventure!
